TRAINING COURSE 1: PROXIMATE ANALYSIS OF FOODS AND FEEDS

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

Proximate analysis is a standard methodology employed in the food and feed industry.  The knowledge, analytical techniques and instrumentation needed in the conduct of this standard method will be taught as well as hands-on experience in the handling and actual analysis of foods and feeds.

A lecture and a laboratory session will combine to teach the theory, principles and standard methods in the analysis of moisture content, ash, crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat and nitrogen free extract (NFE). Analysis of carbohydrates and reducing sugars will also be included.

TRAINING COURSE 2: BASIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES, CHEMICAL SAFETY AND STORAGE, AND LABORATORY WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR CHEMISTRY LABORATORY TECHNICIANS
 
DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:
 
This summer training course is designed to teach chemistry laboratory technicians the following: (a) proper use of common laboratory glassware and equipment, (b) calibration of glassware, (c) preparation of solutions, (d) precision and accuracy of measurements, (e) chemical safety and storage, and (f) laboratory waste management and disposal.

Lecture sessions will teach the theories and principles behind each topic while laboratory sessions will provide the hands-on experience to supplement the concepts learned in the lecture.
